Lumiker, technology for the electricity sector supported by the European Commission

Following the move towards applying optical technologies, CABLESENS is one of the projects approved under Phase 1 of the latest call for the SME Instrument Programme that supports the most innovative European SMEs.
The European Commission has given its support to LUMIKER APLICACIONES TECNOLÓGICAS, an optical technology-based firm located in the Biscay Technology Park, by approving the CABLESENS project under Phase 1 of the SME Instrument Programme. This highly competitive programme forms part of the European H2020 Strategy, and seeks to support highly innovative SMEs with high growth potential.
The CABLESENS project was approved in the recent call for Phase 1 of that programme under the topic “SMEInst-09-2016-2017: Stimulating the innovation potential of SMEs for a low carbon and efficient energy system”, where it obtained high scores for its impact, its excellence and the quality of the project in a tough and very competitive selection process.
Of the 1995 proposals submitted under this latest call for Phase 1 of the programme, only 189 were eventually awarded funding. LUMIKER is one of only two Basque companies among them.
The goal of CABLESENS is to implement a monitoring system for predictive maintenance of electrical infrastructures, so as to help make them more energy-efficient. Thanks to the support received from the programme, in Phase 1 LUMIKER will now seek to confirm that the project is technically and financially viable and design an ambitious technological innovation project applicable to the electricity sector, ensuring its success and reinforcing its position in terms of competitiveness among Europe’s most innovative SMEs.
LUMIKER sees the recent approval of the SME Instrument funding as an unprecedented opportunity and recognition that validates its strategy of building up a business project based on advanced photonic technology so as to obtain clearly distinctive, high value-added products for the electricity sector. This sector has a high demand for technological innovation that can help it become more energy-efficient and meet ever tougher regulations.
